How to change a light bulb
Hello! Owner of Electrician Sarnia and master electrician here!
A lot of the electrical work in a house has to be done by a licensed electrician, but there are a few things you can do by yourself, like changing a light bulb!Changing a light bulb is pretty easy, but has to be done properly in a way that ensures your safety and the safety of others. It consists of 4 steps, I'm here to explain them to you today! Here at electrician Sarnia, we're proud to do things well and to do them safely. Alright, let's start!
You'll need to do a few things for the first step. You want to locate the light switch of the light you want to change. The light switch is usually located near the door of the room. Once that's done, turn the switch off. I recommend doing this during the day because you'll have the sun to light the room and you won't need a flashlight of sorts. Tell the other members of your home to not turn that specific light switch back on, as this could potentially result in a shock. Alright! That's out of the way, we can move on to the next step!
The second step consists of removing the light bulb in question. I'll give you a few safety mesures for removing it. Using a chair, a random object or an appliance to help you reach the light socket should be avoided at all costs because it could cause you to fall and injure yourself. Instead, use a small 3-4 stairs stool if you have one, or go ask a family member or a neighbor for one, I'm sure they'll be more than happy to know that you won't injure yourself while changing your light bulb! Also, let your bulb cool down before removing it. When it's on, a light produces quite a lot heat on its surface, so you should wait at least 10 minutes after the light switch has been turned off to even attempt to remove it! When it's cool to the touch, grip it delicately with one hand and twist it counter-clockwise until it comes off. If the light bulb is shattered but still in its socket, cut a potato in half (yes yes, a potato!) and stick it on the broken light, you'll be able to remove it without hurting your fingers. Congrats! You removed it safely and without hurting yourself. Onto the next step!
Now comes the step of choosing the new light bulb that's gonna go in the socket. If you already have a similar light bulb to the one you just removed, you can skip this step! If not, here's what you'll want to do. On your old bulb, if you look close enough, you'll see small writing on the bottom of it. There's often the type of electrical bulb and the number of watts (W) of it. Write those down on a piece of paper and bring this to a home improvement store near you and they'll help you find what your looking for. Now that we have our new one, let's jump to the final step!
Congrats on reaching this step! Now what you'll do is climb back in your stool with your new light bulb in hand. Now all that's left is to screw it back in! To put it in, you'll have to turn it clockwise into the socket. Not too hard though! just turn it until you feel a small resistance. That's it, you're done!
You did it, you changed a light bulb by yourself! We're in the process of making other blog posts like these to teach you an electrical thing or two, I hope you'll enjoy them!
For more serious, dangerous and complicated work, we still recommend you contact us at Electrician Sarnia for a free quote, as well as quick, affordable and quality work. Call us, we look forward to meeting you!
